Should Orchestras Worry About Gender Parity?
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is in New York City this weekend, playing its annual round of shows at Carnegie Hall. The last time the Vienna Phil made a major splash in the city was in 1997, when the company changed its men-only policy, and began to allow women to join its ranks. Women players in American orchestras, like the NY Phil and the LA Phil, has long been the norm. But is gender parity something that concerns orchestra musicians? An article I wrote for WQXR public radio looks into the matter.

WQXR Previews The Kinks Choral Collection

(flickr user: "hoodrat": by-sa)
Hard to believe that Ray Davies wanted the Kinks to go classical. But he did, and created an entire classical score, The Kinks Choral Collection, for a classically trained choir to perform Kinks ballads. WQXR previewed the Dessoff Choir singing with Ray Davies ahead of their performances at Town Hall in New York.
